Synopsis
Part of the Joel Gustafsson series for children 14 years of age.
From Andersen Press:
12 year old Joel lives with his father in the cold northern part of
Sweden. At night he often sneaks out of his father's house to look for
a lonely dog he has seen from his window. On the bridge across the icy
river he starts a secret society and has adventures. But one night he
discovers that his father's bed is also empty and will have to come
terms with his fathers new found love. The harsh reality of Joel's world
comes vividly to life and leaves the reader spellbound.
Based on the stage adaptation by John Retallack:
This adaptation is a story about a boy and a town. Joel is 11 and
lives alone with Samuel, his dad. Joel has no friends. So he forms a
secret society. All his adventures happen in the middle of the night
while the town sleeps.
He searches for a dog he has glimpsed, a dog that is ‘headed for a
star’. He never finds the dog but he finds Tomas instead. Tomas is
new to the town and has very different ideas to Joel. Tomas believes
a secret society must create fear and he sets out to terrorise a
lonely woman. Joel finally has the courage to defy Tomas but he
risks his life to do so. In a gripping climax, Joel is stranded 100
feet up on an icy railway viaduct in the middle of the night…
A Bridge to the Stars is a strong psychological drama told by an
ensemble of nine who are on stage throughout.
