| BBC to film adaptation of Mankell's Return
of the Dancing Master |
| Posted 18 June 2005 |
Henning
Mankell attended a press conference with the BBC (British Broadcasting
Corporation) to announce an agreement to begin production of an
English-language film based on Mankell's crime novel,
The
Return of the Dancing Master (Danslärarens
återkomst). The film will be shot at the
Ystad Studios
facilities in partnership with Sweden's Yellow Bird Films AB.
The BBC will bring some English cast and crew to Ystad to work on
the project alongside Swedish film workers. My understanding is
that this is planned to be a two or three part series.
According to Julia Svensson, writing for the
Ystads Allehanda newspaper,
Ed
Whitmore will be working on the script during the autumn of
2005 and filming should start in March or April of 2006.
Ole
Söndberg and
Lars
Björkman of Yellow Bird Films were at the press conference.
These two have been involved in many of the recent and older films
in the Wallander series as well as the Martin Beck series. Hopefully
with their help, the BBC will be able to keep their film true to
Mankell's vision.
