The Return of the Dancing Master
Originally published in Swedish as Danslärarens återkomst in 2000 and later translated into German as Die Rückkehr des Tanzlehrers.

Synopsis
"The Return of the Dancing Master" marks the creation of a new Henning Mankell detective named Stefan Lindman. It is unknown if this will become a continuing series or if it is a single work. Interestingly, associates of one of the murder victims from the Kurt Wallander novel Sidetracked make a substantial appearance in this novel.

December 12, 1945. Nazi Germany lies in ruins as a British warplane lands in Buckeburg. A man carrying a small black bag quickly disembarks and travels to Hameln, where he disappears behind the prison gates. Early the next day, nine male and three female war criminals are hanged.

Fifty-four years later, retired policeman Herbert Molin is found brutally slaughtered on his remote farm in Härjedalen, Sweden. At the murder scene, the police discover strange tracks in the blood on the floor... as if someone had been practicing the tango.

Stefan Lindman, a young police officer on extended sick leave, hears about the murder of his former colleague and decides to investigate it himself. Lindman's inquiry becomes increasingly complex and dangerous as he uncovers the links between Herbert Molin's death and a global web of neo-Nazi activity.

Herbert Molin, a retired police officer, lives alone in a remote cottage in northern Sweden. Two things seem to consume him; his passion for the tango, and an obsession with the "demons" he believes to be pursuing him. Early one morning shots shatter Molin's window- by the time his body is found it is almost unrecognisable. Stefan Lindman is another off-the-job police officer.

On extended sick leave due to having cancer of the tongue Lindman hears about the murder of his former colleague and, in a bid to take his mind off his own problems, decides to investigate. As his investigation becomes increasingly complex it is with both horror and disbelief that Lindman uncovers links to a global web of neo-Nazi activity.

Film Information
Two films have been made of The Return of the Dancing Master and a third is planned. Both a Swedish and Austrian version exist, and a British one is to follow in 2006.
